He currently lives in Galveston, Texas. McDermott"s family moved from Houston, Texas, to Roosevelt Island, New York to pursue work as a child model in New York City for the 12-year-old McDermott. At 14, he began appearing in television spots, including Drug Free America Foundation, Ethan Allen Furniture and Stove Top Stuffing.
In 1990, McDermott portrayed Jamie Anderson in an episode of The Baby-Sitters Club.
In 1992, he starred as Garrett Booth opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in the short-lived syndicated daytime teen soap opera Swans Crossing. He was nominated for a Youth in Film Award as Best Young Actor in an Office-Primetime Series for the role in 1993.
McDermott later appeared as Scott Chandler on the American Broadcasting Company daytime soap opera All My Children from 1995 to 1996. At age 16, McDermott landed the lead role of teenager Mitchell Goosen in the 1993 film Airborne, a comedy/drama film also starring Seth Green and a then-unknown Jack Black.

After graduation, he moved to Los Los Angeles In 2003, McDermott moved to Galveston, Texas, where he paints and sells real estate. Active in local politics, he has served on numerous boards and committees, and in 2010 was appointed to the Galveston Park Board of Trustees.
McDermott married Laura Hughes in 2011.
