Background
Shibue Chūsai was born on December 28, 1805 in Edo (now Tokyo). He was the son of Insei Shibue, physician in ordinary to the Lord of Tsugaru.

Shibue Chūsai was born on December 28, 1805 in Edo (now Tokyo). He was the son of Insei Shibue, physician in ordinary to the Lord of Tsugaru.
Studied medicine under Ranken Izawa and Kyosui Ikeda and Confucianism under Meian Ichino and Ekisai Kariya.
Succeeded his father as physician in ordinary to the Lord of Tsugaru. He was appointed instructor at Saiju-kan School of Medicine (1843). Received in audience by Shogun Ienobu (1849).
