She studied at Allahabad University and was the first woman to become secretary, vice-president and president of the Allahabad University Union in the years 1924-1928.

She joined the Khilafat Movement and was one of the prominent women leaders during the Salt March. After the independence, she remained active as a social worker In 1952, she was a founding member, and later the general secretary, of the Indian Council for Child Welfare.
She died on 9 June 1980, aged 75.
A lawyer by profession, she defended Yashpal during his trial in 1932.
She was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1963 to 1968. She was also a founding member of the Indian Humanist Union, of which she became elected chairman after the death of Narsingh Narain in 1972. She was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 11 December 1963 to 2 April 1968.
