Corps. The Pour le Mérite was the highest military order of the German Empire. The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Siegfried Haenicke was captured by Soviet troops in 1945, and died in 1946.
