He was a professional soldier and reached the rank of Lieutenant General in the Rifle Brigade. He served in the Crimean and Anglo-Zulu Wars. On retirement from the Army he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath) and served as Governor of Bermuda from October 1888 to June 1892.
He changed his surname by Royal Licence in 1888 to Newdigate Newdegate.
He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Warwickshire 27 August 1898. Their home was Astley Castle, Astley, Warwickshire.
