Because of the war, he spent 1945-1946 as Scientific Officer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, England and 1946-1948 as Scientific Office at the Ministry of Works. Returning to Cambridge he pursued his studies in Mathematics receiving an Master of Arts in 1950 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1954, under the supervision of Doctorate. R. Hartree. In 1983 he received and Doctor of Science from Cambridge University in Physics and Chemistry.
While pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy, Roy Garstang spent 1951-1952 at the Yerkes Observatory, working under Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, developing his calculations an atomic structure and transitions probabilities for forbidden transitions, of special interest to astrophysicists.
