He played 6 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Oakland Athletics (1998-2001), was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for the finish of the 2001 season, and one season each with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002 and the Texas Rangers in 2003. Christenson played in 452 games in his career, with 222 hits in 998 at-bats (a 222 batting average).

In 2013, Christenson was a manager in the Oakland Athletics minor league farm system for the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. At the end of the year, the Athletics announced that Christenson would become the manager for the Stockton Ports of the California League for the 2014 season.
In December 2014, the Oakland Athletics Double-A affiliate Midland RockHounds of the Texas League announced Christenson as the team field manager for the 2015 season.
