Sara Shepard was born on April 8, 1977, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. She is the daughter of Bob and Mindy Shepard. She has a sister Alison.
From a young age, Sara Shepard and her sister wrote multi-chaptered stories, making up alternate universes and creatures, putting together ideas for video games, and cranking out newspapers with their toy printing press. But the thing that always stood out for Sara was writing. She wrote chapter stories of her own from about fourth grade on and she kept very detailed journals from about seventh grade to her senior year in college. Her eleventh grade English teacher even went so far to say that she no longer had to write themes, she could work on a novel for the whole year. Shepard declined her offer. The prospect of writing a novel terrified her.
She was a good student in high school. In fact, she was pretty nerdy. Her favorite subjects were English, Art, and Biology. She wanted to have a career in all three. She liked drawing and ceramics, she loved reading and writing papers, and she really liked genetics. After her junior year, she even went to a summer program at Brown University to do basic genetic experimentation. She graduated from Downingtown High School West in 1995.
Sara Shepard received a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University in 1999. In 2004 she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Brooklyn College.
Sara Shepard began her career in 2000, working at Time, Inc. Custom Publishing where she was engaged in producing lifestyle magazines for corporate clients. In 2002 she started ghostwriting as a freelancer. Her own writing career began in 2005. Next year her first book Pretty Little Liars was published. It was the first book in the series with the same name which follows the lives of four girls - Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields. The series is based on Shepard's experiences growing up in Chester County. TV series adaptation debuted in 2010 on ABC Family. Shepard appeared in two episodes of the series - "The Homecoming Hangover" and "I'm a Good Girl, I Am." The series was running till 2017.
Her book series The Lying Game which is about a dead twin and an alive twin has been also turned into television series by ABC Family in 2011. In 2019 the book series The Perfectionists consisting of two books - The Perfectionists (2014) and The Good Girls (2015) - became television series titled Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists serving as a sequel to the television series Pretty Little Liars. Shepard also wrote The Heiresses (2014) about a rich family's curse.
Her adult fiction includes The Visibles (2009) about jack lopes and mental illness, Everything We Ever Wanted (2011) which features a guy who discovers his ex lives on a commune, The Elizas (2018) about a young, unreliable narrator trying to figure out if someone's trying to kill her. The most recent book written by Shepard is Reputation (December 3, 2019). She co-authored the 2020 book Influence with Lilia Buckingham. In 2019 she also produced the web series Crown Lake.

Quotations:
"I also try, literally, to stay young. I don’t take myself very seriously. I try to remain silly."
"I think I was always the peacekeeper."
"I simply love to write. I am not one of those people who sits and stares at the screen, waiting for inspiration. I can write and write, even if the first pass is dreadful."
"Don’t worry about getting it perfect."
"As a writer, you have to put yourself in your character’s shoes and understand what they are feeling and the temptations that go with that."
"There are ups and downs and sometimes what you are doing is really popular and sometimes it’s not. It’s ok when it’s not. You still write what you love and still do what you love to do."
"Secrets are very intriguing - I always think that's an interesting theme."
Sara Shepard is very good at deadlines but not organized. She used to be a swimmer. She is a big runner, she likes to run five, six miles every day. She was and still is a little label-obsessed. Her favorite TV shows are Mad Men, Girls, and Modern Family. Her guilty pleasure is lying around by herself reading with nobody bothering her.
Sara Shepard is married. The family has two sons.
