A Democrat, he has served in the Iowa Senate since 2007. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa and his Juris Doctor and Master of Arts from the University of Minnesota. His prior political experience includes serving in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2003 – 2007.
State Legislature Hogg currently serves on several committees in the Iowa Senate - the Appropriations committee.

He also serves as vice chair of the Justice System Appropriations Subcommittee.
As of February 2011, he was the only lawyer in the Iowa Senate. United States. Senate Campaign On July 8, 2014 Hogg announced that he had formed a committee to explore a potential run for United States Senate in 2016 against Republican incumbent Chuck Grassley. Later in 2015, Hogg announced his candidacy.
Hogg has received the endorsement of over 60 state lawmakers, including Iowa Senate President Pam Jochum and Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal.
