He was best known for presenting, with Mark Russell, British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 3"s Mixing lieutenant programme from 1990 until 2007. After ending on Radio 3 the show moved to Resonance FM in London, where it continued under the name Where"s the Skill in That? for a further two years. Sandall also presented editions of the British Broadcasting Corporation"s Late Junction and contributed to British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 4"s Front Row.
In the late 1970s Sandall was singer and guitarist in London-based punk band Blunt Instrument, later known as London Zoo.
Born Robert Paul Sandall, in Pinner, Middlesex, Sandall wrote for Q, Rolling Stone, The Word and Gentlemen’s Quarterly magazines as well being the rock critic for The Sunday Times from 1988 after a brief period at The Daily Telegraph. From 1996 to 2002 he was director of communications at Virgin Records.
Robert Sandall was married to Anita Mackie and they had one daughter, Grace. He died after a long battle with prostate cancer.
