Born in Norwich, England, he was educated at Eton College and then the Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

He served in the military from 1925-1937 and 1939-1952. In 1954, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Flinders, defeating Labor"s Keith Ewert. He held the seat until his retirement in 1966.
Lindsay died in 2000.
