McCann was born on April 24, 1969, in Glasgow, Scotland. He has a sister, Sally-Gay McCann, born in 1972.
Before becoming an actor, McCann was a painter who studied at the Scottish School of Forestry near Inverness. He also worked as a bridge painter (on the Forth Road Bridge), landscape gardener and carpenter. Rory McCann was first trained as an actor by writer-artist Robert Parsifal Finch in The Actor's Workshop, Glasgow in 1998.
McCan first started his acting career in the year 1988. He acted as an extra in the film - Willow. Later, he was fired because he had been laughing too much during the takes. He also appeared in an advertisement for Scott’s Porage Oats wearing a vest and a kilt. Mccann’s first official first major acting role was as a disabled personal trainer in the TV comedy drama - The Book Group. This was in the year 2002, and he also won the Scottish BAFTA award for this role. After his initial debut, he played the character of Detective Inspector Stuart Brown in the television series - State of Play, Peter the Great, and also in Peter in Paradise. He also played the role of a priest in a British drama series called - Shameless. The series went on to win several awards.
Finally, in the year 2004, he made his cinematic debut in the film Alexander. The actors in this film were made to go through the boot-camp in the African desert. The film was a major success, and he gained international recognition. Again in the year 2007, he played the role of Michael Lurch Armstrong in the film Hot Fuzz and also as Moby in the film The Crew.
In the year 2011, he was cast as Sandor “The Hound” in the popular HBO TV series Game of Thrones as a team member of Tyrion Lannister. Besides these, he played roles in multiple films. He appeared as Fergus in coming soon, as Goon in Pasty Faces, as Eric in The Devil’s tattoo and also as Sam in Young Adam. In the year 2006, he played the role of a policeman in the film Sixty Six. He played several more films like - Season of the witch, Slow West, Clash of the Titans, The Crew, Solomon Kane etc.
McCann also appeared in many TV shows like - Randall and Hopkirk, London’s Burning, State of Play, Heroes and Villains, Banished, Rockface, Monarch of the Glen, Shameless etc.
Since his debut in acting, Rory McCann has made a lasting impression in the industry. During his career as an actor, he has made a name for himself as a successful actor, has won and has been nominated for several awards.
