Education
He was educated at Torquay Boys" Grammar School, King"s College London and Kelham Theological College, served in the Indian Army 1942-1947 reaching the rank of Major, became a Chartered Accountant in 1952 and worked as an accountant until 1963 when he was ordained.
Career
His ecclesiastical career began as a Curate at Street Margaret’s, Glasgow after which he was Rector of Street Barnabas’, Paisley. From 1971 to 1975 he was Provost of Street Paul"s Cathedral, Dundee before becoming the 50th Bishop of Brechin. Ten years later he became Primus of Scotland, a post he held until his retirement in 1990.
After retiring, he became an academic and author, earning the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy research degrees from the University of Dundee where he remains an honorary Research Fellow in Modern History, having previously been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (Doctor of Laws).
