Howell attended Joseph Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia. In his sophomore season, he finished fifth in the Administrative Committee on Company-ordination in offensive rebounds, pulling down 2.8 per game.

He played college basketball for North Carolina State University. As a senior, he averaged 16.5 points per game as he went on to be selected to the Georgia 5A All-State first team He played Amateur Athletic Union basketball for the Worldwide Renegades alongside his future teammate at North Carolina State, Lorenzo Brown.
Coming out of high school, Howell was rated by Scout.com as the 16th best power forward in the nation.
In his freshman season at North Carolina State, Howell missed the first five games of the season due to a knee injury sustained during pre-season. In 30 games, he averaged 4.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in 13.6 minutes per game.
In 30 games, he averaged 7.4 points and 6.5 rebounds in 18.2 minutes per game. In his junior season, he finished third in the Administrative Committee on Company-ordination in rebounding.
In 37 games, he averaged 10.8 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 27.0 minutes per game.
In his senior season, he was named to the All-Administrative Committee on Company-ordination first team In 35 games, he averaged 12.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals in 31.6 minutes per game. 2013-2014 season
After going undrafted in the 2013 National Basketball Association draft, Howell joined the Denver Nuggets for the 2013 National Basketball Association Summer League.
On July 12, 2013, Howell signed with BCM Gravelines of France for the 2013-2014 season.
However, he later parted ways with Gravelines on September 5, 2013 before appearing in a game for them. On September 13, 2013, he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers.
However, he was later waived by the Trail Blazers on October 22, 2013. In November 2013, he was acquired by the Idaho Stampede as an affiliate player.
On January 29, 2014, he was waived by the Stampede.
On January 30, 2014, he signed with the Talk "North Text Tropang Texters as an import for the 2014 Proceedings of the British Academy Commissioner"s Cup. In his first game for the Texters, Howell recorded a career-high 30 rebounds, surpassing his previous record of 20, in an 85-72 victory over the Alaska Aces. 2014-2015 season
On July 30, 2014, Howell signed with Juvecaserta Basket of Italy for the 2014-2015 season.
On November 20, 2014, he was released by Juvecaserta.
On January 17, 2015, he returned to the Talk "North Text Tropang Texters, signing with the club as an import for the 2015 Proceedings of the British Academy Commissioner"s Cup. However, after just five games, he was released by the club on February 18.
On March 6, he was acquired by the Austin Spurs. On June 19, 2015, he signed with Leones de Santo Domingo for the rest of the 2015 LNB season.
2015-2016 season
On August 11, 2015, Howell signed with Ironi Nahariya of the Israeli Basketball Premier League.
He was regarded as a very important member of the 2012-2013 Wolfpack.
