He was the eldest son of Samuel Gott of Battle, Sussex and educated at Gray"s Inn.

He was appointed Sheriff of Sussex for 1688. He was also member for Sussex from 1708 to 1710 and for Lewes from 1710 to 1712. He became a director of the New East India Company in 1698 and was a director of the Bank of England from 1698 to 1700.
He died aged 58, possibly by suicide having allegedly hanged himself, and was buried at Street Saviour"s, Southwark.
