Career
He made his Test debut in the Fifth Test against Australia in 1957-1958, scoring 32 in the first innings batting at number eight. He played all five Tests in England in 1960 but scored only 119 runs, making his top Test score of 42 in the Fifth Test at The Oval. His first-class career extended from 1954-1955, when he was 16, to 1979-1980, when he was 41.
His highest score was 229 for Transvaal against the International Cavaliers in 1962-1963, which was also his most successful season, with 852 runs at 71.00 including two other centuries.
According to Wally Grout, Carlstein was "a descendant of a European royal family".
