Hawksley contested Wolverhampton North East in February and October 1974, but he was beaten by Labour"s Renee Short both times. He was then Member of Parliament for Halesowen and Stourbridge from 1992 until 1997, when the seat was abolished. He stood for the new seat of Stourbridge that year, but lost to Labour"s Debra Shipley and has not re-entered the House of Commons since then
During his time as an Member of Parliament he attempted to re-introduce judicial corporal punishment for young male offenders.
