Pippo Psaila, was the Malta national football team coach between 1991 and 1993, and current Director of Sports of the Malta Olympic Committee.
Education
A model student, he received his education at Saint Edward"s College, Malta. In 1975 he was awarded a scholarship by the Malta Chamber of Commerce to Luther College in the United States of America where in 1975-1976 he was honoured on the deans list for academic achievement.
Career
Upon returning from the United States, he joined the family business. He first started as a shift worker, then rose through the ranks till the current position of the Group"s Commercial Director and Company Secretary. Since 1960, he was closely affiliated with Unilever, and this has helped his business.
In 2003 he had an important role in launching the "Biodiesel Project", Malta"s first and largest indigenous clean burning eco-friendly fuel.
Psaila is a national figure with regards to sports, acquiring respect especially with the positive results of the Malta national football team He is a well qualified coach.
From a football club coach he was propelled to the National Team stage where he was actively involved for 9 years at all levels of national teams with the last two 1991-1993 being National coach. Under his tenure the Malta national football team produced some very good results, including the first World Cup qualifying match, which led to the Maltese not ending at the bottom of their groups, and played epic games against Italy, Greece and Portugal.
In fact he was awarded the Football player of the month in May 1992 for the performances of the team and was selected as Manitoba of the Match of Malta 1-2 Italy on December 19, 1992 by journalists.
In 1993, Psaila was elected to the post of Director of Sport of the Malta Olympic Committee, a post he still retains. Psaila directed the event quite successfully, and the participants called the edition as best ever, both from a sports perspective and a financial perspective. Psaila will contest his first general elections in the interests of the Partit Nazzjonalista over the ninth and tenth political districts of Malta.
