His brother Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck became the king following the abdication of his father on 14 December 2006. Prince Jigme Dorji is the fourth son of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck from Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon.

His Royal Highness Prince Jigme Dorji Wangchuck was appointed the Gyaltshab (King"s Representative) for the six eastern districts of Bhutan. As Gyaltshab, he heads of office of the Gyaltshab based in Gyalpozhing, Mongar, and administer"s His Majesty"s kidu to the people. Prince Jigme Dorji wed Yeatso Lhamo on 17 October 2013 at the Domkhar dzong in Chumig, Bumthang, the maternal home of the bride.
