In the next couple of years, Taylor took physics and mathematics courses through the Open University in order to improve his chances of gaining a place on the weather-forecasting programme at the Met Office College. Having worked as a Met Office meteorologist since 1998, Matt joined the British Broadcasting Corporation Weather team in 2004, originally working at the Cardiff weather centre. He now broadcasts across a range of British Broadcasting Corporation outlets, including British Broadcasting Corporation One, British Broadcasting Corporation News, British Broadcasting Corporation World News, Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 4 and 5 Live.
He"s a regular weather forecaster on British Broadcasting Corporation Breakfast, mainly at the weekends and also often forecasts for Radio 4"s Today.
Taylor"s accent reflects some mobility in youth - his family moved to Glasgow, Scotland when he was one, and to Leeds in Yorkshire when he was fourteen. His interests include golf, squash and football.
In an interview, he ruefully admitted the worst thing about his work is the shifts.
