He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler who played first-class cricket for four years for his home county of Kent. Banes attended Tonbridge School alongside teammate Editor Smith and later Durham University. Having made his debut in the Second XI championship in 1998, he made his first-class debut one year later against a team of New Zealanders before making his first appearance in the County Championship a week later.
He participated in three consecutive years" C&G Trophies, before quitting the game in 2003.
