After retiring from athletics Marshall returned to school teaching and went on to become headmaster of Southwell School in Hamilton, New Zealand for 16 years. He and his Waikato-born Olympic team mate John Holland were honoured by having parallel streets named after them in Hamilton. He died at his home in Hamilton in 2013.
In the 1989 Queen"s Birthday Honours, Marshall was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to education and sport.
