Suess studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University Munich and, while a student, began working as a technician at the Bayerische Motoren Werke foundry.

After graduation, he began his professional career in 1989 as production engineer at Bayerische Motoren Werke in Munich. In 1994, he received his doctorate (Doctor rer Political) from the Institute for Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics at the Technical University Kassel, Germany. After serving various positions at Bayerische Motoren Werke, IDRA Press South.p.A. in Italy and Porsche AG, Suess was appointed to the Managing Board of Mössner AG in Munich in 1999.
Following the takeover of the company by the Georg-Fischer Group, Suess was named Chairman of the Managing Board of GF Mössner GmbH. In 2001, he took over as Chief Operating Officer at Michigan Technological University Aeronautical Engines GmbH in Munich and was responsible for production, development and procurement.
Following the public listing of the company, Suess joined the Managing Board of Michigan Technological University Aeronautical Engines Holding AG and was responsible for the company’s technology portfolio. Suess then joined Siemens AG in 2006 as President of the company’s Power Generation Group.
As Chief Executive Officer of the Fossil Power Generation Division beginning in 2008, he was responsible for the fossil power plant business. Since 2010 he helds a supervisory Board position at Herrenknecht AG the german based World market leader of tunnel drilling rigs
Michael Suess has been a guest lecturer at the Technical University Munich since 2013.
Since January 2015 he is Chief Executive Officer of the GMH Group, a privatly owned german based company group of steel and casting companys
Additionally he serves as Chairman of swiss based OC Oerlikon since April 2015 as well as First Vice Chairman of Austrian Electricity Company Verbund AG
In September 2015 he was appointed as Professor at the Technical University Munich.

From April 2011 to May 2014, he was a member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and Chief Executive Officer of the company’s Energy Sector.
