Michael Tyzack was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, and studied from 1952 to 1956 at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London.

He is considered an important representative of contemporary abstract painting. He was also known as a jazz musician. Among his fellow students included, among others, Patrick Heron and William Scott.
In 1956 he received a scholarship for a stay in Paris.
After his return in 1957 he was active as a jazz musician in addition to his painting. His work is characterized by its colour-happy Geometric abstraction.
In 1968, he was a participant of the fourth "documenta" in Kassel, with six geometric-abstract paintings. Since 1955 his work has been exhibited in over 50 group exhibitions in the United Kingdom and in France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, Australia and Canada.
He died, aged 73, in Johns Island, South Carolina, United States.
