Millicent Ellis Selsam was born on May 30, 1912 in New York City, New York, United States. The daughter of Israel Ellis and Ida (Abrams) Ellis. She had also nine siblings.
Millicent Selsam became interested in biology during her high school years. She took this interest to college when she studied biology at Brooklyn College. Later she earned a master's degree in botany at Columbia University.
After receiving her Master of Arts, Selsam taught high school science before deciding to write science discovery books for children in 1946.
Her first book was "Egg to Chick", published in 1946. Since then her work found outlets at Harper & Row, Morrow, Macmillan, Doubleday and Walker, among other publishers. She started a series of ''I Can Read Books'' for Harper and regularly contributed to the ''First Look at ...'' series published by Walker. Both series introduced inquisitive children to the animal kingdom and the marvels small children discover all around them. Her other publications include "Microbes at Work", "Plants that Heal", "The Language of Animals", "The Apple and Other Fruits", "Animals of the Sea", "Sea Monsters of Long Ago", "Tyrannosaurus Rex", and "Night Animals".
In addition, for some years she taught biology at Brooklyn College and in New York City high schools.
During her career, Selsam wrote over a hundred children’s books.
She died age 84 on October 12, 1996 at Mary Manning Walsh Home in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States.
