He was educated at King"s College School, Pembroke College, Cambridge (Master of Arts 1978. Master of Engineering 2001) and the University of London (Bachelor of Laws).
He was the successful Scottish National Party candidate for Angus North and Mearns in the 2011 Scottish Parliamentary election. Nigel"s previous jobs include a 13-year career as a chemical engineer with Unilever. He later became a music teacher and a publisher.
Prior to his election to the Scottish Parliament, Nigel was a councillor (2003-2007) for Ninewells ward, and Scottish National Party Group Convenor on Dundee City Council.
He was elected in May 2007 to the multi-member Lochee ward but resigned as councillor on 23 August 2007 to concentrate on his role as Managing Successful Programmes. His Political Interests include Law, Energy, Nutrition and Weight Management, Environment and Culture. Nigel is married to Doctor Wendy Wrieden.
They have two adult children.
As an Managing Successful Programmes, Nigel is Convenor of the Cross-Party Group on Construction and a Member of the Cross-Party Groups on Oil and Gas, Life Sciences, Deaf Awareness, and Renewable Energy.
A member of the Scottish National Party (Scottish National Party), he was elected by Party List to the Scottish Parliament to represent North East Scotland region at the 2007 election. As of January 2015, Nigel is Convenor of the Delegated Powers and Law Reform Committee, and a member of the Public Audit Committee.
