Nikolai Radin is a grandson of the famous choreographer Marius Petipa. His father Marius Mariusovich Petipa (ru: Петипа, Мариус Мариусович) was the son of Marius Petipa and the famous dramatic actor.

He finished a Faculty of Law, Saint St. Petersburg State University (1900), but interested in theater and began to participate in performances.
His mother Mariya Kazankova was a dressmaker. First, he successfully played small roles, then was invited to the big roles. Gradually he became known for dramatic actor, but did not receive special education.
In 1932 the theater Korsch was closed, and they moved to the Maly Theatre.
