( This book explores and clarifies all the major issues a...)
This book explores and clarifies all the major issues and developments within ‘family theorising’. It covers the extraordinary growth and variety of approaches to the family over the last decade, the most significant being the impact of feminism and the professional and state intervention into the family through marital and family therapy. The author focuses on the growth of family counselling, giving a detailed analysis of the Home Office publication, Marriage Matters. He looks at the rapid growth of historical studies of the family, European theoretical developments, the work of the Rapoports, the role of systems theorising, and phenomenological and critical approaches to the family. He shows the relevance of family theorising for contemporary debates about the state of marriage and the family, and argues for the centrality of ‘family themes’ within wider sociological debates.

(The distinction between friends and acquaintances is ofte...)
The distinction between friends and acquaintances is often made in everyday conversation but the significance of this distinction is under-explored. Acquaintanceship can be understood as a form of knowledge of other people that lies somewhere between intimates and strangers. This book argues that acquaintanceship is a topic worthy of investigation in its own right and assesses the overall significance of acquaintances in late modern society. This fascinating book examines the topic by: • Exploring possible definitions of acquaintanceship • Examining the key features of acquaintanceship • Considering its nature and significance in a variety of settings Analysing different forms of acquaintanceship - including those in places of work, neighbourhoods and between professionals and their clients - it also explores passing acquaintances and newer forms of ties such as those formed over the internet, with celebrities or even fictional characters. Soundly based in sociological theory, the book assesses the extent to which acquaintances can provide a sense of location and security in modern life and the ways in which they can provide us with insights, often fleeting, into worlds other than our own. Written by one of the foremost authorities in the field, this book is key reading for sociology students, lecturers and researchers, in particular those interested in sociological theory, social interaction, the sociology of everyday life and the sociology of intimacy.

(The changing nature of the family is a topic of intense p...)
The changing nature of the family is a topic of intense public concern. It also has been the focus of research in sociology and related disciplines for many years. Family Connections is a major new introduction to the study of the family, written by one of the leading scholars in the field. Morgan shows that the study of the family is not a peripheral concern of sociology but rather lies at the heart of sociological theory and research. Family Connections takes the reader through the established debates, such as the relation between family life and the world of work and employment, the impact of class and stratification on the family, and the relevance of gender. Morgan then examines some newer areas of social inquiry, including the sociology of the body, time and space, food, and the home. The relevance of the family to more general topics of sociological theory such as postmodernity, citizenship, consumption and risk are all discussed. The emphasis throughout is on family relationships as processes which are fluid, complex and open to change. This timely, wide-ranging and innovative book will be of great interest to students and scholars in family studies, sociology, and gender and women's studies.

(A critical perspective on the growing number of books dea...)
A critical perspective on the growing number of books dealing with issues of men and masculinities, this work looks at some of the theoretical, practical and political difficulties that arise when men begin to study themselves. The author also outlines some of the strategies that might be adopted to overcome these difficulties, including: a re-reading of sociological classics, and an examination of areas where masculinity comes under question; for example, male unemployment, changes in the structure of the workplace and the suffrage movement. The book takes issues of methodology and epistemology as key points for discussion. A distinctive feature is the critical engagement between mainstream sociology and gender studies. This book should be of interest to students of sociology, gender studies and men's studies; it should also be useful on research method courses.
