Owen Johnson attended Lawrenceville School, fron which he graduated in 1895. Then he studied at the Yale University until 1900.
In 1895 Owen Johnson was a founding editor of a school magazine The Lit in Lawrenceville. Then he was appointed an editor of Yale Literary Magazine in 1900. He was a war correspondent for the New York Times and Collier's during World War I.
Owen Johnson also was a reporter in police court during the first decade of twentieth century. Before 1920 he served on Republican National Committee. Moreover he was unsuccessful Democratic candidate for U.S. House of Representatives from the First Congressional District of Massachusetts in 1936 and 1938.
Owen Johnson changed his political views during his life. He was a Republican, later Bull Moose, and finally was a Democrat. In 1936 and 1938 he became extremely interested in politics, running for the House of Representatives, but unsuccessfully.
Owen's first wife Mary Galt Stockly died in 1910. His second wife was Esther Ellen Cobb, better known as Cobina Wright Jr., whom he married in 1912 and divorced in 1917. His third wife was Cecile Denise de la Garde, who died in 1918. Then he married Catherine Sayre Burton, but she also died in 1923. Finally, he married Gertrude Bovee Le Boutillier. He was the father of five children.
