In 1912 he discovered the rock carvings at Vingen, the first rock carvings with hunting motives discovered in Norway. He is credited for reintroducing the tradition of celebrating Olsok, from 1897. He was a pioneer in climbing in Norway, and made several first ascents of mountains and glaciers.
The ice phenomenon Bings gryte at the Jostedalsbreen glacier is named after him.
Among his works are Guttekorpsene i Bergen from 1889, and Olsoktradition from 1919.
