He is from Kinsley, Kansas. Named All-CPL First Team three times. Named All-Area and First Team 2A All-State his senior season and All-CPL four seasons as a basketball player. In 2008: (Junior): Played in 12 games, starting in eight.

Played one season of basketball at Pratt Community College. After going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, Burkhart signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks. After being released form the Seahawks due to injury, Burkhart signed with Hartford Colonials of the UFL 2010.
Burkhart signed with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League 2011.

In 2009: (Senior): Started in all 12 games at left tackle, earning Honorable Mention All-Conference United States of America by coaches and 1st Team All-Conference United States of America by Philosophy Steele as well as Rivals Publications.
He was an All-Area selection at Kinsley High School in football and also was a member of the school"s basketball team
