Lee Robert Bobker was born on July 19, 1925 in Belle Harbor, Queens, New York, United States.
In 1949 Lee Robert Bobker graduated from New York University with a bachelor’s degree.
Lee Robert Bobker served as a combat infantryman in World War II and earned a Bronze Star for bravery during the Omaha Beach landing in Normandy. After graduation from university, he joined a production company where he was a writer and learned to direct documentaries. In 1956 he joined the staff of his alma mater as an instructor in film, but continued writing film scripts. In 1958, he made the documentary, Psychiatric Nursing. In 1959 he formed his own company, Vision Associates, and served as its president until he dissolved it in 1998.
Some of his best known work was done in the 1960s. In 1966, he made The Odds Against about the correctional system with Helen Kristt Radin. In 1968 he was a film director of The Revolving Door. He was associate producer of David and Lisa, a story about two disturbed teens. His Emmy nomination came for ''I, Leonardo,'' a 1983 PBS series about the life of Leonardo da Vinci. In the early 1990's he turned to cable television and made the critically acclaimed biographical film ''Isaac Stern, a Life.'' He also made a film about censorship, ''The First Amendment,'' for the American Library Association.
In addition to his films, Bobker contributed articles to both professional and popular magazines and wrote several books: Elements of Film, Making Movies: From Script to Screen, and the novels The Unicorn Group and Flight of a Dragon, Echoes and Shadows.
