He was the son of geographer Olaf Ivar Monrad Kayser (1893–1928) and Hedwig Martha Nick (1877–1972).

In Stockholm, he studied composition with Hilding Rosenberg and orchestral conducting with Thurs Mann.
Kayser began studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 1936, where he was a student of Poul Schierbeck. Kayser debuted 1941 as pianist in Copenhagen and as conductor in Gothenburg.
