Career
Arbuthnot was not part of the official touring party which had just 11 players, but appeared in seven of the 13 first-class matches, including two of the games against teams representing the combined West Indies. He batted at Number 11 in all but one of his seven games and he did not bowl. He played cricket, Research Associate Bennett"s XI cricket team in West Indies in 1901-1902.

He relinquished his commission (temp Captain, Aide-de-Camp personal staff, general list) and was appointed temp Lieutenant 23 January 1919. He relinquished his commission (temp Major, Captain ret"d pay) and retains the rank of Major 20 June 1919.

Brigadier-General, Royal Fusiliers. (Serbia) 5th class. He was the son of (Hugh) Gough Arbuthnot (grandson of Sir William Arbuthnot, 1st Baronet) and Caroline, née Molyneux. He was educated Harrow School from 1882-1886.
He was a partner in Arbuthnot Latham & Company from 1896–1906.
Married, first, 18 April 1894, Violet Rebecca Morris (died 11 November 1951), daughter of Sir John Henry Morris, KCSI of South Kensington. Divorced 1913. Lionel married second, 9 June 1927, Ada Ellen Brunker (born 29 July 1874, died 15 March 1963), daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel H.M.E. Brunker (the Cameronians) and formerly the wife of James Thomas Sydenham.
