Born in Iowa in 1975, Springer attended Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1997 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Military History in 2006.

He is now a history professor at the Air Command and Staff College and has also taught at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has appeared as a consultant and interview subject for programs on the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and the National Geographic Channel. Springer was named a Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Research Institute in 2014.
