He was born in Copenhagen as a son of shoemaker Matthias Hansen (c1708–1789) and his wife Anna Marie Malling (1716–1766).

He was a brother of architect Christian Frederik Hansen. He studied theology at the University of Halle, taking the doctorate in 1893. He served as Bishop of the Diocese of Kristiansand from 1798 to 1804 and Bishop of the Diocese of Funen in his homecountry from 1804 to his death.
He died in October 1810 in Odense.
