Career
According to Houbraken he was a pupil of January Brueghel the Younger and made small finely painted landscapes populated with figures. Houbraken saw views of the Rhine by him that were quite good, done in the manner of Herman Saftleven. According to the RKD he was a pupil of Johannes Boots and became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1650.
He is sometimes confused with Philips Gijsels.
He had a son of the same name and is known for landscapes and still life paintings.
