According to the RKD he was a pupil of Gerard Dou and Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp. He is known mostly for genre paintings of Dutch and Italian village life. He moved in the 1670s to Hulst where he became a brewer.

In 1638, he became a member of the Dordrecht Guild of Saint Luke and, in 1656, one of the founders of the Confrerie Pictura.
