(Murder, mystery, and interstellar intrigue! Lassti, a new...)
Murder, mystery, and interstellar intrigue! Lassti, a newly discovered planet, is the center of political intrigue. Recently the planet survey team’s physicist was found dead. Was he killed? If so, by who? One of his fellow surveyors? Or by one of the birdlike natives of Lassti? This is, if they are intelligent at all, which is proving hard to tell. Into this mix arrives Tocohl, a Hellspark trader who just wanted to have a vacation. After being attacked, rescuing a young woman, and going before a judge, Tocohl has learned all she ever wanted to know about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now she is seeking answers to mysteries that could save a world. Hellspark, in particular, is one of our very favorite novels in any genre. All of Janet’s excellencies are apparent as she explores the interfaces of culture, language, intelligence, and what it means to be human. If you have not read Hellspark, you must do so immediately. It's that good.”—Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, coauthors of the best-selling Liaden Universe® series “An absolute delight.”—Mike Resnick At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Janet Lorraine Kagan was born as Janet Lorraine Megson on April 18, 1946, in Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey, United States.
Kagan wrote science fiction novels and short stories that considered to be of exceptional quality both in the integrity of the science upon which they are based and in the intrinsic interest of her well-rounded, sympathetic characters. In her first novel, Uhura’s Song, the author created a new adventure for the cast of the original Star Trek television series. Kagan created her own characters for her second novel, Hellspark, a murder mystery in which a scientist is killed just as he is about to prove that the inhabitants of Lassti, a newly discovered planet, are sentient, a discovery that would make the colonization and economic exploitation of the planet problematic.
In Uhura’s Song, Kagan envisions a race of cat-like beings threatened with destruction by a plague that could destroy the entire human population of the Federation. Kagan’s novel passed the stringent test of Star Trek fans in portraying the original characters “interacting with the warmth and wit that bring them to life in the mind’s eye,” according to St. James Guide to Science Fiction Writers contributor Catherine M. Currier. While some critics felt that Uhura’s Song would particularly appeal to fans of the original Star Trek television show, others claimed a special interest will be taken by readers who are also cat lovers.
Kagan’s Mirabile constructed an utopia based on genetic engineering helped out by sociological principles. Kagan's science fiction and fantasy short stories appeared in numerous periodicals including the Analog Science Fiction and Fact and the Asimov's Science Fiction.
