(Tom Bodett, humorist, radio star, and pitchman for Motel ...)
Tom Bodett, humorist, radio star, and pitchman for Motel 6, lives and writes in Homer, Alaska, the little town in the blue Northwest where America stops, carwise. "If you got into your car in New York, " he said, "and wanted to take a nice long drive, I mean the longest drive you could without turning around or running into a foreign language, this is where you'd wind up." It's a place of moose and salmon and spectacular sunsets, but, Bodet insists, it's also small-town America, a place not all that different from the Michigan town of his youth. That's why he's made it his everyday, for the rigors of the outdoor life and the mundane joys of the family circle. "As Far As You Can Go Without a Passport, " Bodett's first collection of casual essays, contains pieces on eveything from trapping, tree cutting, and halilbut fishing, to soap operas, lost socks, and sleeping in. It's guaranteed to please both the renegate and the homebody in every reader.

(Hailed as "immediately and universally recognized as indi...)
Hailed as "immediately and universally recognized as indispensable" (TLS) and "compellingly readable, richly researched, fascinatingly detailed, delightfully written" (LRB), here is a masterful exploration of the ways in which people sought to lead fulfilling lives, illuminating the central values of early modern England, while casting incidental light on some of the perennial problems of human existence. Keith Thomas, one of the foremost historians of our time, sheds light on the origins of the modern ideal of human fulfillment and explores the many obstacles to its realization, looking at work, wealth, possessions, friendship, family, and sociability. The book looks at the cult of military prowess, the pursuit of honor and reputation, the nature of religious belief, and the desire to be posthumously remembered. The Ends of Life offers a fresh approach to the history of early modern England, providing modern readers with much food for thought on the problem of how we should live and what goals in life we should pursue.

(Washington, D.C. - New findings of a review of the Warren...)
Washington, D.C. - New findings of a review of the Warren Commission Report and the 95th U.S. Congress House of Representative Hearings offer positive proof that Oswald was the lone assassin of President Kennedy. Ballistics expert, Edward P. Rem, has proven mathematically that the missed rifle shot as recorded by the Dallas police motorcycle radio caused a preliminary loud bang as it passed the enclosed grassy knoll area at a supersonic speed of 2200 feet per second. According to the findings, "This ‘loud bang’ has been misinterpreted by many as being an independent rifle shot from the grassy knoll, which it is not." In the two manuscripts (J.F.K. Assassination - Rifle Shots Phenomenon Exploded, and J.F.K. Assassination - The Smoking Gun), Mr. Rem shows in detail how this phenomenon occurred, and how it is scientifically proven by the acoustic report filed by Weiss and Aschkensay during the House Assassination Hearings. In 1994, the U.S. Department of Justice reviewed correspondence pertaining to these manuscripts by Mr. Rem, and concluded that it is appropriate that his findings be referred to the U.S. House of Representatives. It was also the expressed hope of Assistant U.S. Attorney General, Ms. Jo Ann Harris, that the findings of Mr. Rem be incorporated into the U.S. House of Representatives’ files at that time. Just published in November of 2002, the book version of the manuscript has been distributed to each member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, in hopes that a Congressional member will sponsor the inclusion of these findings into the files of the House Assassination Hearings. Mr. Rem further supports these new ballistic findings with several examples of his first hand experiences in combat as an infantry sergeant during WW II. As he puts it, " I’ve been on the receiving end of all military hardware - the machine pistol, the rifle, the machine gun, the mortar, the artillery including the dreadful German 88mm, and on two occasions our own artillery. In combat, recognizing the acoustical aspects of ballistics is a matter of life and death." At the end of WW II, Edward Rem was honorably discharged from duty, having received two Silver Stars, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars, and the allied Government of France’s French Cross (the "Croix-De-Guerre" avec etoile de bronze). It is Mr. Rem’s hope, as well as the hope of the Justice Department, that these new findings relating to the J.F.K. assassination will be recognized by the United States Congress.
