(This is a modern-English edition of Burroughs' most well-...)
This is a modern-English edition of Burroughs' most well-known and beloved book, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, first published in 1648. It has long been regarded as the most useful book ever written for promoting a contented, thankful, uncomplaining and grateful walk with God. We live in a world of grumblers, discontent with God's widespread goodness. It is all too easy for Christians to share in this spirit with the world. This book, in typical Puritan form, 'doctors' the reader by proposing remedies to our spiritual diseases and helps us grow a spirit of thankfulness in its place. The author focuses especially on helping to bring calm and contentment to the hearts of those in sad and discouraged times. He also aims to promote peace and harmony among believers with various differences of opinion.

( The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration...)
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. (This, the fifth in the series, is, like our other Puritan...)
This, the fifth in the series, is, like our other Puritan paperbacks, a practical and experimental book, which is designed to show the happy effects that sound doctrine should have upon daily life. The very title makes it clear that this grace of contentment, although as precious as a jewel, is also very rare. How many of us today, among the people of God, can say with honesty that, having food and raiment, we are therewith content? Burroughs' analysis of what true Christian contentment is and what it is not, his examination of the sin of grumbling and murmuring against God, and his inquiry into the practical effects which true contentment brings to the believer, make up a book which answers every possible excuse that our hearts can offer to avoid this duty. Burroughs concluded his book by pointing out that though he had preached many sermons on this lesson of contentment, most people take much longer to learn it than he took to preach it. It is comparatively easy to preach or speak on contentment--it is a much harder thing to learn it in the heart. Do not be content, is his final word, till you have learned this lesson of Christian contentment, till you have gained some better skill in it than you have had hitherto.

(The Evil of Evils, first printed in 1654, consists of six...)
The Evil of Evils, first printed in 1654, consists of sixty-seven short chapters that expose sin and urge believers to choose affliction over sin. Burroughs organizes his material around seven major thoughts: (1) there is more evil in the least sin than in the greatest affliction; (2) sin and God are contrary to each other; (3) sin is directly against our good; (4) sin opposes all that is good; (5) sin is the evil of all other evils; (6) sin has infinite dimension and character; and (7) sin makes us comfortable with the devil. This treatise is invaluable for sensitizing our consciences to the exceeding sinfulness of sin (cf. Rom. 7:13).
