He played college football at Penn State and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He was rated by Rivals.com as a three-star recruit. He committed to Penn State University to play college football.
James played in 12 games as a true freshman in 2012, making six starts.
He had 15 receptions for 276 yards and tied a school record with five receiving touchdowns by a tight education As a sophomore in 2013, James started all 12 games and had 25 receptions for 333 yards and three touchdowns.
