Career
He competed at three Olympic Games. He brought Canadian cycling back into the international limelight. He continued to race as an amateur into the early 1980s.
However, tragedy struck on 4 August 1983 when he was involved in a collision with a gravel truck while training in Halton Region, just northwest of Toronto.
Police investigators said that Lovell pulled alongside or in front of the truck and braked, resulting in the collision. The truck hit him from behind and broke his neck and pelvis.
He is now a quadriplegic. Number charges were laid.
