Career
According to Houbraken, he was a flower painter along with Frans Ykens. According to Cornelis de Bie"s work on painters called Het Gulden Cabinet, however, which had been Houbraken"s source, only Frans was a famed flower painter, and January was famous for being good at arranging subjects. He had first learned to draw as part of his training to become a sculptor, and he was a respected sculptor before becoming known for his paintings.
He entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1639 as winemaster, meaning he was the son of a member.
