Wilson was born at Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, the third son of Review John Wilson, Doctor of Divinity Wilson was educated at Irvine and at the Edinburgh and Aberdeen Universities.

He arrived in Australia in June 1840, and in July 1859 was elected to the New South Wales Parliament for the Goldfields South, being afterwards returned for Patrick"s Plains (December 1864 to November 1869) and East Sydney (February 1870 to February 1872). Wilson was Secretary for Lands in the Martin Ministry from October 1863 to February 1865, and under the same premier from January 1866 to October 1868, and December 1870 to May 1872. Wilson distinguished himself by his efforts to secure parks and recreation grounds for the people of Sydney.
He died on 30 April 1883 at Moore Park, New South Wales.
