After primary education in a nearby school, he attended high school at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Irinjalakuda, Thrissur. He went to South South College, Taliparambu in Kannur for his predegree. He had his bachelor"s degree in Political Science from Payyannur College, Payyannur and master"s degree in political science from Kerala Varma College, Thrissur.

From Thrissur, John Brittas went to Delhi and attended Jawaharlal Nehru University for an The Master of Philosophy and later a Doctor of Philosophy.

John also took it as an opportunity to dabble in the electronic media after a long association with the print media.
After working for three years in Delhi, he was made the managing director of the channel and was transferred to Kerala. After an eleven-year stint, he resigned from Malayalam Communications Limited and became the Chief Executive Officer of Asianet Communications Limited on 2 May 2011. on 27 February 2013 he got an offer from Master of Comparative Laws as Doctor of Medicine of new division and he will take charge march 2013 He acted in a malayalam movie "Velli Velichathil" released in 2014 which was a box-office disaster.
John Brittas was the youngest correspondent to get the Central Hall pass in the Parliament. He has covered parliamentary proceedings for both Kairali television and Desabhimani. He did first hand reporting for the general elections between 1991 and 1999. He also covered the general election in Nepal soon after the death of King Birendra. He was physically present in Ayodhya during the Babri Masjid demolition. He was the first journalist from India to reach Baghdad during the recent war in Iraq. From there he not only reported for his channel but also wrote for various newspapers. He got the Journalism al Award from the Goenka Foundation for his research on "The Impact of Globalization in Print Media".
