Brown attended Andrew Jackson High School and First Coast High School in his freshman and sophomore years.

Brown then moved to Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Florida for his junior year. He was also a first team All-State and Jacksonville Times-Union All-First Coast team In 2010-2011, he played for both Body of Christ Christian Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Oldsmar Christian School in Oldsmar, Florida.
Brown redshirted his freshman season of 2011-2012.
In 2012-2013, he was named the Big South Freshman of the Year, as well as becoming just the second freshman ever to be named to the first team All-Big South. In 28 games, he averaged 16.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.2 blocks in 25.9 minutes per game.
On March 31st, he was named Associated Press All-American honorable mention. In February of 2015, Jay Bilas called Brown "the best dunker in college basketball".
On January 14, 2016, Brown scored his 2,000th career point in a loss to Winthrop.
Brown is the son of Zarenia Dorsey, and has one older brother, Javon, and one younger brother, Ja"Ron.
