During the previous two decades he had worked for Harold Ballard as an executive of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and financial officer of Maple Leaf Gardens. He was a chartered accountant by training and joined Maple Leaf Gardens in the 1970s. He later said in an interview with the Toronto Sun “When I went in (to MLG), there was less than a million dollars in surplus earnings.
When I left, it was a stable business, with $14 or $15 million in retained earnings.”
Crump, an executor of Ballard"s will in 1990, helped Steve Stavro gain control of Maple Leaf Gardens Enterprises following the death of Ballard.
