(English Prose is the greatest instrument of communication...)
English Prose is the greatest instrument of communication! that is now in use among men upon the earth. On this, ground alone if on no other it would seem to be worthy of that enquiry which is suggested by the natural curiosity for knowledge. Yet it is a thing to be noted, that whereas our Poetry has called forth a succession of critical literature from, the times of Elizabeth until now, no like attention has been, paid toE nglish Prose. The present work is quite new, not merely in details and. in treatment, but in its very conception. All previous works, upon English Prose, so far as I am acquainted with them, have busied themselves solely with the rhetorical graces of composition. I have therefore thought it the less necessary to expatiate much upon these, and I have tried rather to lay down, the foundation and to exhibit the substantial fabric upon which the ornamental part may be displayed. For it is precisely in the figurative and ornamental part that method and doctrine can do least; what they can do best, is to provide the elementary framework for the reception and the setting of such ornaments of diction as flow from the wealth of thewriter sown mind. Mr. Herbert Spencer has observed that the maxims contained in works on composition and rhetoric, are presented in an unorganized form. He has certainly made himself quite secure from any retort of this animadversion. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (The study of A nglo-S axon is the study of a dead languag...)
The study of A nglo-S axon is the study of a dead language which stands in open continuity with the living English of to-day. It offers a means whereby all who own the English language by birthright may on the easiest terms win a share of those benefits which are more elaborately purchased by the study of Greek and Latin. Truly there is a fine poetic ken which is won by the study of classic languages; but much of this reveals itself spontaneously to the Englishman who will but bestow a look of natural kindness upon the antique glory of his mother tongue. Old language is a sort of poetry. I ts poetic light shines out by the foil of modern phrase, and all who vernacularly know the new are qualified to taste the romance that kindles in the old. But while all English folk have a fair inviting gradient between them and the serener heights of Saxon antiquity, the classical scholar has the highest interest in a study which would tend both to increase his usefulness and also to secure to him the fuller enjoyment of the fruits of his labours. It will hardly be denied that there is an untoward breach between our academic learning and the general intellect of the land. The education of school and college often perishes because there is no corresponding power of communication. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (Excerpt from English Plant Names: From the Tenth to the F...)
Excerpt from English Plant Names: From the Tenth to the Fifteenth Century Of the manifold attractions in the Saxon Vocabularies, nothing has charmed me more than the native Plant-names, which have there been preserved in the most primitive form extant. For many winters these lists were to me as a kind of winter-garden, wherein I could botanize at the fireside and look at familiar plants through the eyes of remote ancestors. Wishing to impart this pure and exquisite pleasure to some friends of mine and friends of Saxon studies, I printed the following lists from the editions in the readiest manner without any idea of making a book. I made no revision of the texts, excepting a manuscript in the library of St. John's College, Oxford, which, through the kindness of the President, I collated with No. V. After the lists were thus hastily printed, I was encouraged to add indices and an introduction. The indices will facilitate such a comparison of the lists as will often enable readers to correct scribal errors for themselves. Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)

(Excerpt from The Psalter of the Great Bible of 1539: A La...)
Excerpt from The Psalter of the Great Bible of 1539: A Landmark in English Literature HE Hebrew text of the Psalter was already strange to the generality of Christians even in New Testament times. For the first fifteen centuries it was explored only by a solitary student here and there. It was the Reformation that caused Hebrew to be taken up as a continuous study among Protestant divines. The general use of the Psalter in Christendom has from the first depended on Versions; and mainly on three, the Greek, the Latin, and the English. Each of these has its own several title to pre-eminence. The Greek is pre-eminent as having been the first in date; and with this fact 'is connected its high dis tinction as an external independent witness of the state of the Hebrew text before Christianity. Down to the sixteenth century, this translation had almost the honours of an original. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
