"An astonishing, soaring and seizing novel that means no less than to explain human culture. A detective story with a real detective and a real thief—and yet all the while it is the mind that is being plundered of its own frights."—Cynthia Ozick "Acts of Theft ranges from the lost world of the Austrian aristocracy . . . to a thick-walled hacienda in the jungles of Mexico in the 1950s. . . . Cohen has resurrected the special man, the one for whom experience is a search an an intellectual problem, the man who deceives himself grandly and discovers the fact when it may be too late. . . . Cohen's writing is as beautiful and complicated as it is possible for writing to be. Rarely, these days, do novelists risk so much so successfully."—K. Deborah Taub, Baltimore Sun "One of the rare novels that one can begin to reread as soon as the last page is finished. By unfolding the drama of an artist obsessed by the authenticity and perfection of his work, Arthur A. Cohen recalls to us, in fact, the destiny of all human existence. Acts of Theft ranks with the best novels of the post-war period."—Mircea Eliade "Acts of Theft is a very elaborate story of cops and robbers—but it aspires to much more and its aspirations are largely fulfilled. The parallels that spring to mind are Crime and Punishment and Les Mesérables."—Joseph McLellan, Washington Post

(For over half a century Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), one of...)
For over half a century Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), one of the original masters of the Bauhaus, did pioneering work in all of the fine and applied arts. This is the first book to present a comprehensive survey of Bayer's enormous oeuvre; Arthur A. Cohen traces the development of Bayer's visual ideas across six decades and as many genres, proving that Bayer—more than any of his Bauhaus colleagues—produced an art that simultaneously expressed the needs of an industrial age and the impulse of the avant-garde. Bayer himself served as the art director of the hardcover edition of this elegantly produced volume. It is lavishly illustrated with 43 color and 350 black-and-white plates, many of which come from Bayer's own archive and have never before appeared in print. In accordance with Herbert Bayer's sixty-year commitment to the use of the lowercase alphabet, all 32 of his essays included here are set in miniscules.

(If Jewish-Christian relations are to be established on an...)
If Jewish-Christian relations are to be established on an honest foundation, the facade of seeming harmony and concord must be broken through. The present uneasy state of accommodation assumes a Judeo-Christian tradition that never really existed. The author contends that the historical fact is one of theological enmity. For serious Christians and Jews , the true common ground should be not a doctrinal "historical myth" but a natural fraternity that would develop out if "de facto social and political co-existence." The common task of both faiths is the humane preparation of history for the Kingdom of God. The author argues for a Judeo-Christian critique of Western culture' the invigoration of a prophetic radicalism, a dissent from the harmonious conservatism of inherited religion. The essays are theological and historical; some are polemical. The major essays are extended inquiries into the grounds of the myth, its origins, its obfuscations and dishonesties.
